A Pair of Gem-set Cufflinks by Van Cleef and Arpels

in the form of a modernist stepped motif, set with deep pink
calibre cut rubies, all set in white gold. Post-war, circa 1945

Signed 'Van Cleef and Arpels'
Numbered: 41.891

Size of terminal: 10mm square

The simplicity and geometry of these cufflinks suggests they were made just after the Second World War,
when the decorative arts looked to machinery and aeronautics for inspiration. During the war, great
innovations had been made in the design and production of machinery and weaponry. Once the war
had finished, these advancements inspired artists to produce very mechanical and utilitarian works.
