the exterior is deeply chased with scrolling mtoifs in which are held
remnants of the ring's original white enamel.

Posy rings derive their name from the word "posy" or "Poesy" - a derivative
of poetry meaning short rhyme. The rings were popular from the late medieval
period onwards and were used to communicate secret messages between
the giver and recipient.
The wearing of words against the skin was
also believed to increase their poignancy.

The engraving to the ring is possibly unique. It is previously unrecorded and
does not appear in English Posies and Posy Rings, by
Dame Joan Evans,( London, 1931).
