The 'Combat heureux' legend and emblem
is taken from Amorum emblemata by Otto Vaenius (1608). Dutch love
emblems were disseminated throughout Europe in volumes by Vaenius and other seventeenth-century
engravers.
The style of enamelling is particularly associated with the Toutin workshops in Blois and Paris during the
period 1630-83, as well as Dutch enamellers of the mid seventeenth century. For similar examples of this type
of decoration see Plates 14 and 15, items 266 and 285 in The Art of the Jeweller: A Catalogue of the
Hull Grundy Gift to the British Museum, Edited by Hugh Tait, London, 1984.
