Newman cameo pendant

An agate and gem-set pendant
designed by Mrs Philip Newman,

set centrally with an oval agate cameo of Elizabeth I,
scratch signed 'G Bissinger' on reverse,
encircled by a border of carved emeralds in the form of a laurel wreath
entwined with a rose diamond ribbon,
suspended from a diamond-set pendant loop
on a chain set with diamonds and half-pearls in gold.

The pendant incorporates the image of Elizabeth I in the form of an agate cameo by Georges Bissinger,
a medal-winning gem engraver who exhibited in Paris and Vienna in the 1860s and 70s.
Bissinger was working from a cameo of Elizabeth I held in the Cabinet des Médailles
in Paris. An example of his work is held in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Mrs Philip Newman, the designer of the jewelled mount, was a pupil of John Brogden.
She exhibited with him at the Paris Expositions of 1867 and 1878,
winning a médaille d’honneur.
