the sealstone of striated agate, uncut.

By Carlo and Arthur Giuliano

Contained in its original box, with label on underside inscribed:
'Given to me by Sir Lawrence Alma Tadema
made for him by some famous Egyptian.
It is gold and real hiroglyphics (sic) that can be read.
 St John's Wood, 1911.’

Jewels in the Egyptian taste were made by the firm of Giuliano from the 1860s,
reflecting intense public and artistic interest in the style.
Large numbers of Egyptian artefacts made their way to London
and Giuliano mounted Egyptian scarabs and faience as brooches.
The Giuliano premises at 115 Picadilly displayed a figure of the Egyptian god Osiris.

Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, O.M., R.A., (1836-1912)
was one of the most successful painters of the Victorian era, known for his depictions of ancient Greece and Rome.
He also portrayed Egyptian scenes, such as ‘Egyptian Chess Players’, painted in 1865.
