An enamelled gold 'Papyrus' brooch by Giuliano,
in the Egyptian Revival taste,
the head a stylised fan-shaped flower
decorated in shades of blue, black and white
champlevé
enamel surmounted by
six seed pearls,
on a coiled gold stem.
This subtle jewel evidently reflects the passion
for Egyptology in Victorian England;
Giuliano's premises on Piccadilly were decorated
with a figure of the Egyptian god Osiris.
Carlo Giuliano, London,
circa 1870
3.5 cm long
