This chess piece was made to commemorate a unique game of chess, that was played between
members of the House
of Commons in London and members of the House of Representatives in
Washington. The game was played using transatlantic cable, through which instructions of a team's next move were sent.
The match lasted two days and ended in a draw.
An almost identical chess piece formed part of the
Judith Siegel donation to the Victoria and Albert Museum.
