A gold and enamelled pendant by Lucien Falize,
centred with a square panel decorated with a fantastic winged
creature carried out in vivid red and blue translucent enamels
against an opaque ivory enamelled ground, surmounted and
suspended with a hinged gold openwork mount
of chased floral motifs.
Paris, circa 1880.
5.8 cm in length
Such depictions of winged creatures are inspired by those found
adorning Medieval illuminated manuscripts, often accompanied
by minute representations of botanical elements as echoed in
the foliate motifs also featured in this jewel. The ivory enamelled
ground provides a successful contrast with their vivid palette
and echoes the silky texture of vellum.
See ‘Falize, A Dynasty of Jewellers’ by Katherine Purcell,
page 71, for a bracelet by Lucien Falize similarly decorated.
